Acupuncture During IVF: What to Expect at Each Stage of the Cycle
IVF can feel like a lot—medications, monitoring appointments, procedures, and waiting. Acupuncture is sometimes used alongside fertility treatment as supportive care, with treatment adapted to each stage of the IVF cycle.
At New Heights Acupuncture & Chinese Medicine, acupuncture is individualized around your IVF schedule, symptoms, and how you are feeling throughout the process.
Before Your IVF Cycle
Some patients choose to begin acupuncture before ovarian stimulation starts. This gives us time to understand your menstrual history, sleep, digestion, stress levels, and any symptoms that may be affecting your overall well-being.
This stage is less about following a fixed “fertility protocol” and more about preparing for the weeks ahead and supporting your general health.
During Ovarian Stimulation
During stimulation, fertility medications encourage multiple follicles to develop while your fertility clinic closely monitors hormone levels and follicle growth.
Acupuncture during this phase may be adjusted as your medications and symptoms change. Some patients experience bloating, fatigue, headaches, mood changes, or stress during stimulation, so treatment is often focused on comfort, relaxation, and overall well-being.
Your fertility clinic’s medication and monitoring schedule always takes priority.
Around Egg Retrieval
As retrieval approaches, the ovaries can feel enlarged and the lower abdomen may feel full or uncomfortable.
Acupuncture appointments around this time are typically gentle and adapted to how you are feeling. After retrieval, treatment may focus on relaxation and supporting recovery from the procedure.
Always let your acupuncturist know when your retrieval is scheduled and if your fertility physician has given you any specific restrictions.
Before and After Embryo Transfer
Embryo transfer is often one of the most emotional parts of an IVF cycle. Acupuncture around transfer is commonly used to help patients feel calmer and more comfortable during the process.
It is important to keep expectations realistic. Current research has not consistently shown that acupuncture performed around embryo transfer improves IVF live-birth rates, so I view it as supportive care rather than a treatment that guarantees implantation or pregnancy.
The Two-Week Wait
The period after transfer can feel especially long. During this stage, acupuncture is generally gentle, with an emphasis on relaxation, sleep, emotional well-being, and any symptoms you may be experiencing.
It is also a time to avoid making unnecessary changes to medications, supplements, or herbs without speaking with your fertility care team.
Acupuncture Alongside Your IVF Care
Every IVF cycle is different. Your acupuncture treatment should reflect your individual protocol rather than follow the exact same points or schedule for every patient.
Acupuncture does not replace reproductive endocrinology care, medications, monitoring, or other medical treatment. Instead, it can be incorporated as part of a supportive approach while you move through a physically and emotionally demanding fertility journey.
At New Heights Acupuncture & Chinese Medicine in Houston Heights, IVF acupuncture is tailored around your fertility treatment schedule, symptoms, and individual needs at each stage of the cycle.
